Energy bill complaints increase in Riverina region

  • Ombudsman to host FREE Bring Your Bills Day in the region

The Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) saw a 56% increase in complaints from customers in the Riverina region last financial year. 78% of these complaints were about billing or affordability issues, which include high bills, disconnection, payment difficulties or debt collection.

To support and educate customers in the region, EWON is hosting a free Bring Your Bills Day for residents and small businesses in Wagga Wagga on Thursday 10 April 2025.

EWON is a free and fair dispute resolution service that assists customers when they can’t resolve issues with their energy or water provider.

"We understand that customers are facing affordability challenges and accumulating energy debt. That's why we're bringing our staff directly to the community, to offer advice on managing bills, saving energy, and dealing with energy providers,” said Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW, Janine Young who will attend the event.

“Our aim is to address people's concerns, review bills, and work together to resolve any issues face to face.”

EWON’s Energy Transition team will also be on hand to talk to landowners and community members affected by renewable energy infrastructure projects.

“We’re coming to listen to communities affected by renewable energy or transmission infrastructure, to fully understand the issues locals are facing, provide advice and resolve complaints,” said Ms Young.

EWON will be joined by various community and government agencies, as well as energy providers who will provide direct assistance to their customers regarding energy bills. Additionally, consumers will receive specialised support and advice on legal and financial matters, tenancy rights, disability and seniors support and community and social services.

To make the most of these events, customers are encouraged to bring their current and past energy bills, letters from retailers, Centrelink Health Cards, and any other relevant concession cards.

The Ombudsman will also be visiting renewable energy infrastructure development sites and meeting with stakeholders in the Riverina region to build EWON's understanding of local issues.

When: Thursday 10 April 2025, 10am – 5pm
Where: Wiradjuri Land, Glenfield Community Centre, 8 Tanda Place, Glenfield Park, Wagga Wagga
