Power of Choice reforms begin in NSW

From 4 December 2017, all new electricity meters installed for residential and small business customers need to be advanced digital meters (sometimes called ‘smart’ meters). The older-style basic or accumulation meters will be phased out and replaced with digital meters over time.

This rule change came out of the Australian Energy Market Commission’s Power of Choice review of the National Energy Market. It is aimed at giving customers more control over their electricity use by giving them access to new products and services.

The Power of Choice review outlines several benefits for customers including faster connections and transfers, the end of estimated meter reads and frequent updates on usage, helping customers to keep track of the energy their household or business consumes.

EWON will monitor the rollout and address any issues that arise to help ensure customers benefit from the change.
